Why do some people explode while others shut down?

Both can be responses to disturbance. One releases force too quickly; the other contains it so completely that movement stops. Neither response necessarily restores balance.

What may be happening

When a stimulus meets an old wound, the response can oscillate outward as anger, accusation or panic. It can also become rigid as silence, withdrawal or suppression. Different histories produce different routes, but both can be attempts to control the same internal disturbance.

The book’s term

Critical Damping

Critical damping is borrowed from mechanics as a structural analogy. It describes a return towards balance without prolonged oscillation and without rigidity. Applied to human response, it does not mean passivity or permanent calm. It means meeting what happened with enough movement to respond, but not so much that the disturbance takes command.

Why this matters

The useful question is not whether someone is emotional or unemotional. It is whether the response can move through disturbance without multiplying it. That makes proportion, rather than suppression, the measure.
